Cañal en Flor ("Sugarcane in Bloom") is inspired by the poem of the same name by celebrated Salvadoran poet Alfredo Espino, published in his beloved collection Jícaras Tristes. In the poem, Espino imagines the sugarcane fields as a sea, with a boat of fantasy drifting across them — an image Wilber Salguero brings to life here, with a campesino sleeping in his canoe amid blooming cane, beneath a volcano and rising moon.
