A tiny hand-painted ceramic cántaro (clay water jug) from [Ilobasco], El Salvador, with an open front that frames a miniature nativity scene. Inside are Joseph, Mary, baby Jesus in the manger, a cow, and a donkey. The cántaro is a familiar shape in Salvadoran homes, where clay jugs have long been used to carry and keep water cool, and many families set up a nacimiento (nativity) each December. This piece brings both traditions together in something small enough to hold in your palm.
Each cántaro is painted by hand, so the pattern of lines and accents around the outside will vary slightly from piece to piece.
